I was very suprised to see Arkabutla Lake on this list! I grew up on this lake, learned how to swim here, fish here, and even was proposed to at this lake. Arkabutla Lake is bordered by two counties in North West Missipsspi, DeSoto and Tate. There are several camping area’s that range from swanky to primitive. Pleasant Hill point is very primitive,no bath houses, and potties that are basically covered out houses. P.H.P. is very small, maybe ten sites, but it does have a swim area and boat ramp. Hernando Point is South of Hernando,MS,and is one of the nicest camping area’s on the lake. It has lots of campsites, hilly and shady terrain,a large boat ramp and swimming area. I am unsure if there is a bathhouse.
Arkabutla Lake is part of what was a WPA prodject under the Roosevelt Admin. Arkabutla,Sardis,Enid, and Grenada Lakes were created to help with Ms River Flood control,in the 1930′s.
Arkabutla is unique because it has its own Isalnd in it. You can,to this day, find Native American arrowheads. The isalnd is accesiable by boat in spring, summer, and fall, and by 4 wheeler or horseback in winter, when the lake is drained. The lake is drained to pretty much a dry bed during the winter,in pre prep for spring flooding. There is an emergency spillway there, and I saw in 1991,a flood so bad the water was over that spillway.
I think there are 3 or 4 camping area’s on the Tate county side of the lake, where the spillways are located. Tate county is a dry county, but booze is prohibited throughout. A Mississippi fishing license is required for fishing, and I can personally attest to the fact there are MONSTER water buffalo fish in the lake, and catfish as well. Many small time commercial fishermen run trot lines, nets, and jugs in the lake.
I hope you enjoy the time you spend at my favorite spot on Earth. To some it may be a muddy hole in the ground, and mind you,its not a clear water lake, its good ole Mississippi mud, but you will enjoy your time there.
