Healthy Camping Food

When you think of healthy camping food, do you think of cans of greasy chili, unhealthy hotdogs, and fattening smores? Well, these may be some of the favorite camping foods of others, but just because you’re not going to be in your own kitchen doesn’t mean you can’t eat healthy. Below, we’ll discuss how to create delicious and nutritious healthy camping food meals for your camping trip.

Healthy Camping Food

Healthy Camping FoodIt’s important to have the supplies you need in order to keep your food, such as coolers in the summer for cold drinks or ingredients that have to be kept cold. If you’ll be cooking food, you’ll need pots, pans, utensils, dishes, and any seasonings you plan to add. Creating a menu and packing the ingredients based on that can be very helpful.

Healthy Camping Food to Pack

One of the things avid campers know is that you should only pack what’s essential to the trip. The last thing you want is an extra 20 or 30 pounds in your backpack that you don’t really need to be lugging around. Therefore, lighter foods are better. For instance, dried cereals that can be eaten with nothing but hot water (such as flavored oatmeals) are a great idea. Dehydrated fruits like blueberries, raisins, and cranberries make a great, nutritious snack.

Nuts and granola bars are also an excellent addition to the supplies. Dried noodles and dehydrated sauces can make delicious dinners. A few cold or frozen meats might be a great idea, in addition to eggs and any desserts you might want. Pack cold foods sparingly, though, especially since most people go camping in the stifling heat of the summer. Use alternatives when you can. For instance, canned spray cheese that doesn’t require refrigeration can be used in place of sliced cheese. Peanut butter, canned meats, and canned vegetables are also great ideas.

Length of Trip

Finally, consider the length of your trip as you pack. You’ll want to ensure that you have plenty of food for breakfast, snacks, lunch, dinner, and desserts (as well as drinks) for the entire length of your camping trip. Following these tips makes it easy to plan for healthy camping food during your camping trip!
